Abstract

Bolivar Echeverría suggests the “Baroque Ethos” as a survival tool before modernity forced by Europe. It is analyzed as a way of negotiation between conquerors and conquered, where catholic church established its own spaces and, throughout some centuries, generated in Ecuador a cultural expression, displayed in Baroque art. This heritage appears once again in the 20th century in the influence of Mexican Muralists Movement, Latin American indigenists and the arise of Ecuadorian Social Realism. This article analyzes Eduardo Kingman’s painting Los Guandos and explains part of its meaning with the concept of the Baroque Ethos.

Key words: Ethos barroco, modernity, expressionism, muralism, indigenism, plastic.
