Textiles and Garment Practices in Histoire des robes by Annette Messager

This essay observes the series Histoire des Robes by the French artist Annette Messager as an example of the way in which the artist uses textiles and clothing in her artistic production. Furthermore, it examines how, through the dresses, she reflects on the social associations they carry. The article will offer a concise overview of key aspects of the use of textiles and garments of 20th century western art. Subsequently, Messager’s work will be examined in order to understand how she uses dresses to reconstruct a history, story or individual and collective narrative.
