Abstract

The work of Eduardo Solá Franco (1915-1996) does not fit into any of the common narratives that characterize Latin American art of the modern period. His was a very personal project of enigmatic narrative figurative art, eclectic and fluctuating in style, wherein an autobiographical impulse symbolically inscribes the most important episodes and concerns of his life. Through a bizarre and dramatized pastiche of religious, historical, mythological, literary and costumbrista themes, the author reinterpreted tradition, using artistic conventions to mask his experiences and affective relationships, while exploring conflicts derived from his sexual identity and spiritual search. His oeuvre, including his experimental films, overflows the modern paradigm and appears in close dialogue with contemporary art trends that, through appropriation and micronarratives, explore elements of difference and the representation of dissident sexualities.

Author Biography

Rodolfo Kronfle

Rodolfo Kronfle Chambers. Guayaquil, 1970. Investigador y curador independiente. Tiene una licenciatura en Historia del Arte por Boston College y ha cursado estudios de maestría en Arqueología en la ESPOL. Ha publicado decenas de ensayos, impartido conferencias y comisariado numerosas exposiciones en varios países. Del 2003 al 2015 editó la página RioRevuelto.net, el más extenso archivo virtual de arte contemporáneo ecuatoriano, luego de lo cual co-fundó la plataforma Paralaje.xyz. Ha desarrollado algunos revisionismos del arte moderno local y es autor de libros como Historia(s)_en el arte contemporáneo del Ecuador 1998-2009 y Limpio, lúcido y ardiente: Artes visuales y correato (Ecuador, 2007-2017) donde analiza la producción cultural crítica frente al horizonte político del país. Se desempeña además como asesor de instituciones culturales de alcance latinoamericano y global como la Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), la Rockefeller Foundation, la Bienal de Cuenca y el Museo Casa del Alabado.
