Disease Thrower #2 by Guadalupe Maravilla, play, symbol, and festival: An approach from Hans-Georg Gadamer.
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article analyzes Guadalupe Maravilla's work "Disease Thrower #2" through Hans-Georg Gadamer's concepts of play, symbol, and festival. Maravilla, a Salvadoran artist, blends his migratory and bodily suffering experiences, particularly his battle with cancer, into an interactive and therapeutic artistic expression. The work, focused on a sanctuary with gongs and ritualistic objects, seeks viewer participation, turning them into co-creators. Gadamer argues that play is essential in the artistic experience, and the festival represents community in its most complete form. The symbolic function of the work, playful interactivity, and the creation of a full temporality highlight its character as a social and transformative event. Together, the artwork challenges traditional art categories by merging the symbolic, playful, and festive in a multisensory experience.
